The belief that the next move will be for the Fed to reduce interest rates has now also become politically tempered, and now markets believe the Fed will not make a move next week. Commentators point to the need to avoid having an effect on the up-coming G-20 and a potential U.S. China trade agreement. Avoiding the appearance of being influenced by the President, and avoiding the appearance that their previous rate increase was a mistake.
Kevin Hassett, the Chairman of the White House Council of Economic Advisers believes that the U.S. economy will grow 3% this year. Market opinion suggests that we will see 2% for second-quarter gross domestic product growth. However, with the rise in the May Retail Sales, plus an upward revision in the previous month's numbers, and an increase in U.S. manufacturing output in May, the first monthly gain this year, the concerns about the softening of the economy seem to have faded.
U.S. government debt yields were little changed on Friday as investors wait for any policy change from the Federal Reserve. The yield on the 2-year note was around 2.02%; the 5-year 1.84%; the 10-year 2.08%, and the 30-year bond 2.59%.
